We have all heard the claim in our society that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. It is true that there are a lot of poor people in the world. Jesus told us that the poor would always be with us (Mark 14:7). However, capitalism, where individuals own the means of production (and not the government) has caused more people to emerge from poverty than any time in history.
THE HOLOCAUST AND NATURAL LAW Another state has recently passed legislation to teach about the holocaust. The Nazis killed around 20 million people during World War II as part of their murderous campaign against those who they saw as unwanted. Not even children or women were spared. At least 6 million of these people were […]
Before looking at the evidence, I was skeptical about the resurrection of Jesus. Although I was raised as a Roman Catholic, there were many doubts in my mind about the veracity of the reports in the Bible. My course in logic had given me tools to analyze the best claims that Christians made. It was […]

“You’re just using a God-of-the-gaps argument!” Apparently the new atheists are having an influence with this type of response. A friend of mine referred to all of the god-of-the-gaps arguments for God’s existence. I asked who he’d been reading. Dawkins and crew were his favorites. The God-of-the-gaps reflects the view that all arguments for […]
Can the Bible change your entire life? Reflect on a season of life that changed the trajectory of your future. The result of my study of Scripture changed mine. My time at seminary was to equip myself to plumb the depths of God’s word more effectively. Both the lessons of the professors and the books we […]
“Woman plans to marry poplar tree named Tim.” “Man marries robot he built.” “Woman marries herself.” These are not fake news headlines. They would have been considered a joke not long ago. In today’s society, confusion abounds about the institution of marriage. Many of my students have asked me to give them guidance […]
Scholars use different tests to assess the reliability of ancient documents. One of the tests that is used looks to external evidence for the account. There are many sources to which one can look when it comes to the New Testament account of the life and resurrection of Jesus. One is the Jewish […]
Nearly a third of the world, 2.2 billion people, profess to be Christians. This week marks the time of year when these many billions will reflect on and celebrate Easter. The prophecies fulfilled in history— especially found in Isaiah 53—denoted a significant piece of evidence that persuaded me that Christianity is true. […]
“That’s true for you but not for me!” Slogans like this oppose the notion of truth and are heard across America when people disagree. The statement is meant as a way of telling the person they disagree with what is said AND that it doesn’t apply to them. However, truth reveals itself despite […]
DIVINE GUIDANCE OR A BAD BURRITO? I have written a book on the Bible that will be published in the Fall of 2017 called Reading to Grow: A Field Guide to the Bible. In the book I’ve tried to answer most of the questions my students have asked about the Bible in my last […]
Forty-four years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States legalized abortion in America. In parallels reminiscent of the Dred Scott decision, the Supreme Court’s position was that the unborn human’s right to life was of less value than a woman’s freedom to choose whether to kill her unborn child. Some may protest the way […]
Our nation just celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day. One of the greatest works ever written was created by this man on April 16, 1963 in his famous Letter from Birmingham Jail. It was a powerful call to action against injustice rooted in natural law. The subject of the work is an eloquent plea to […]
